Recently, the famous Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho suffered one of the biggest losses in his glorious career. The Roma team he led was broken down 1 : 6 by the Norwegian champion Bоdо/Glimt in a match of the newly formed Conference League tournament which Roma won after all.
But here are the top 5 biggest losses of Jose Mourinho’s career:
Middlesbrough – Chelsea 3 : 0 (2005/06)
Jose Mourinho’s first stay at Stamford Bridge brought a solid number of trophies to the club, including 2 Premier League titles. In Mourinho’s debut season in London, Chelsea recorded a single defeat, and only 15 goals conceded in the door of Peter Cech. In the next campaign, however, the Chelsea team registered more losses, and one of them which was against Middlesbrough came after a series of nearly 3 months without defeat. The first goal fell after just 78 seconds, and a moment before the end of the first part, Downing scored a beautiful goal for 2-0. In the second half, Yakubu made the result 3-0, and that was one of Chelsea’s weakest matches in the first “Mourinho” era.
Borussia Dortmund – Real Madrid 4 : 1 (2012/13)
A match that football fans in Europe will hardly forget soon. It was also Mourinho’s last campaign at the Royal Club, and he failed in his task of returning the European Cup to Madrid. During the season, the Portuguese was closest to winning it after reaching the semifinals in the race, but his team had to measure strength with the very strong Borussia Dortmund team. The Signal Iduna Park match has become an absolute classic, and Borussia striker Robert Lewandowski found a place in history, scoring four goals in Diego Lopez’s net. Real scored only 1 goal through Cristiano Ronaldo, but the overall performance of the team was apocalyptic. The severe loss was also reflected in the rematch, where the “whites” failed to catch up with the backlog and eventually said goodbye to their dreams for the final.
Manchester United – Tottenham 0:3 (2018/19)
If “The Special One” is known for anything, it is the very strong home form that his teams demonstrate. Mourinho rarely loses at home, and when that happens, the result is taken as a real surprise. Well, at the start of the 2018/19 season, the Red Devils had to swallow two defeats in the first three rounds of the Premier League. After a disappointing away defeat by Brighton, Mourinho’s hopes of a positive response were dashed by Tottenham’s inspired team. Despite a massive number of shots towards Lloris’ net, United did not find the goal but instead got a goal from Harry Kane and two from Lucas Moura. A few months later, Jose was fired – for the third time in his career.
Chelsea – Manchester United 4:0 (2016/17)
Jose’s debut season at the Red Devils has been crowned with some success. The team won three Cups, though not exactly the cups their fans had hoped for, ironically, they have proved to be last in the club so far. The start of the campaign, however, was quite turbulent. In the ninth round, Mourinho confronted his former team and was completely swept away. Pedro’s first-minute goal gave the Blues the lead, and then Gary Cahill, Eden Azar and N’Golo Kante. The 4-0 final was quite humiliating and provoked Jose to accuse his team-mate Antonio Conte of indecently enjoying each of the goals. At the end of the season, Chelsea became champions and United finished sixth.
Barcelona – Real Madrid 5:0 (2010/11)
The first El Clasico in Mourinho’s managerial career not only didn’t go as planned, but it turned into a real disaster. The squealing Portuguese was literally carried away by Barcelona’s inspired team, at the peak of their abilities and led by their legend player and coach Pep Guardiola. Real arrived in the Catalan capital after a run of seven straight wins and with high confidence, but in the 10th minute, the Kings were already lagging behind after Xavi’s goal. By the end of half-time the score swelled to 2-0, and at the start of the second half, David Villa kicked two quick goals for 4-0. The final goal was made by the substitute Jeffrén Suárez, which was scored seconds before the referee’s signal to end the match. After the game, Mourinho said he had never conceded five goals before but admitted the result was fair.
