Robert Polievka, a top goal scorer in the Slovak league, recently made his debut for the national team. However, his father has taken a remarkable decision to embrace a life on the streets, dedicating himself to assisting the homeless.
Polievka had an impressive season with Dukla Bistrica, finding the back of the net 15 times in 30 matches. The 26-year-old footballer showcased his talent on the international stage, representing Slovakia in matches against Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Surprisingly, Robert Polievka Sr., the player’s 50-year-old father who shares the same name, made a voluntary choice a few months ago to embark on a life as a homeless individual on the streets of Brno, Czech Republic. Reflecting on his unconventional path, he stated, “If someone had told me 15 years ago that I would lead a life devoid of responsibilities, roaming the streets, I would have dismissed it with laughter. It was beyond my imagination.”
For years, the elder Polievka worked as a compassionate nurse in Slovakia, devoting himself to the care of the homeless. Witnessing numerous poignant stories during his tenure, he recalled a particular incident: “Once, a man was brought in who had endured life on the streets of Poprad for 8 long years. His condition was deplorable. When I helped him into the bathtub, he broke down in tears, confessing that he hadn’t felt the touch of kindness for 8 years. I bathed him for a solid 45 minutes, grateful that my fortitude did not waver.”
The initial months following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for Polievka Sr. “For nine months, I was confined within a building, observing the plight of the homeless. Amongst 8 caregivers, only three managed to avoid falling ill. We had to constantly wear masks and gloves,” he recounted, highlighting the demanding circumstances.
Choosing an unconventional lifestyle despite other possibilities, the 50-year-old man still maintains an apartment in Slovakia and adamantly refuses any assistance from his son, who has made repeated offers to support him. “I take solace in witnessing my son’s goodness and success. I am fully aware that he would go to great lengths to rescue me from the streets. On multiple occasions, he has attempted to extend financial help through my daughter, but I politely decline. I value his efforts, but I would gladly distribute those funds among other homeless individuals,” he expressed with humility.
