Only a few footballers would dare intentionally postpone their medical assessments before joining a new team, as such an act could be viewed as unprofessional and potentially jeopardize the transfer.
However, there are also only a handful who could fathom the recent action taken by Newcastle’s right-back, Kelll Watts.
Just a few days ago, the 23-year-old player returned to Wigan on loan. He made an unusual request to delay his medical exams, citing his engagement with the widely watched reality TV dating show “Love Island.” Watts wished to complete watching the latest episode before making his appearance at Wigan’s training base.
The club’s medical officer, Jonathan Tobin, took to social media to disclose this rather unconventional demand made by the player prior to finalizing his loan move.
“I have never before encountered a situation where a player requested to postpone a medical examination in order to finish watching an episode of ‘Love Island.’ I assure you, I’m not joking,” the club doctor wrote.
Kell Watts developed his skills in Newcastle’s youth system. Despite his struggles to secure a spot in the first team, he has been consistently loaned out. Following the 2021/22 season, he will once again don the Wigan jersey as a loaned player.
