The legendary status of David Hurst at Sheffield Wednesday speaks volumes, particularly through a match that took place on January 1, 1990.
In a “BT Sport” broadcast, the former striker for the “Owls” recounted the story of his iconic match against Manchester City.
With a 2-0 victory for Sheffield Wednesday, Hurst shared:
“Our esteemed manager Ron Atkinson had us gather for breakfast at seven in the morning. Champagne bottles adorned each table with glasses nearby. So, that morning, I indulged in perhaps six or seven, maybe even eight glasses. By the first half, I managed to score a goal that propelled us to a 1-0 lead, and by then, I was feeling a bit fatigued.”
Interestingly, the champagne seemed to have an invigorating effect on Hurst. In the second half, facing the unfortunate injury of goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, he made an unconventional decision: “In the second half, our goalkeeper, Kevin Pressman, had to be substituted due to a knee ligament injury. I told the referee, ‘Ref, I’ll step in as the goalkeeper,’ and I successfully defended the goal. Despite even breaking my finger, we emerged victorious.”
